Buying Guide: Filters, Tape, Hooks and Safety Gear

Filtrete Air Filters
Filtrete pleated air filters for central heating and cooling systems come in sizes such as 14 in. W x 25 in. H x 1 in. D, with ratings such as MERV 8, MERV 11 and MERV 12. Allergen Defense filters help capture lint, pollen, dust, pet dander, smoke and smog. Filtrete also offers flat panel and air purifier filters, so match the size or part number on your old filter before you order.

Tape, Hooks and Hanging Strips
Tape types include Scotch electrical, masking and double-sided mounting tape, 3M duct tape and Safety-Walk anti-slip tape. ScotchBlue Original Multi-Surface Painter's Tape can stay on for up to 14 days and then removes easily. Command hooks and picture hanging strips go up without tools or nails. Weight limits differ, such as a 4 lb double hook or 20 lb hanging strips, so check the limit first.

Respirators, Eye and Hearing Protection
Disposable N95 respirators are for certain dusts and particles, such as from sanding. Other respirators and cartridges are for uses such as paint spray and lead paint removal, and many are for workplace or professional use only, so check the use named on each product before you buy for a home project. Earplugs and earmuffs show a noise reduction rating in dB, such as 25 dB, 28 dB or 30 dB, and safety glasses include anti-fog and polarized lenses. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for any protective gear.
