Buying Guide: Metal Sheet, Rod and Coupling Nuts

Metal Sheets
The 6 in. uncoated steel weldable sheet, sold in packs of 5, has a cold rolled steel finish that makes it weldable and ideal for repairs or fabrication. The galvanized steel sheet metal is sold in sizes such as 12 in. x 18 in. and 12 in. x 24 in., both in packs of 5, so compare these sizes with the piece you need before you cut.

Threaded and Weldable Rod
Zinc plated threaded rod is sold in coarse thread, such as the 12 in. L size in packs of 10. Electroplated threaded rod should not be welded, so use the steel weldable unthreaded rod, such as the 1/4 in. x 36 in. size, when welding is part of the job. Match the thread size of the rod to the coupling nut you will use.

Coupling Nuts
Steel coupling nuts join threaded rods end to end, and they are used by plumbers, electricians and contractors. Sizes include 3/8 inch-16 and 7/16 inch-14, both sold in packs of 25, so match the thread size on the coupling nut to the rod you are joining. Check the count in each package before you order, and measure the rod if you are unsure of its thread size.
