Buying Guide: Choosing the Right Screw Type

Roofing Screws
These hex washer head roofing screws fasten without the need to pre-drill and attach roofing and wall panels to steel and wood framing. Some have a self-sealing neoprene washer for a waterproof seal, and some have a finish with exceptional corrosion resistance in harsh outdoor environments. Match the length, such as 3/4 in. L or 1-1/2 in. L, to the thickness of your panel and framing.

Sheet Metal Screws
These zinc-plated steel screws have hex washer heads and fasten metal to metal with self-tapping threads, and the zinc plated finish protects the appearance of the job. The drill point and flute remove material and size the holes for the threads. Choose the size and head type to suit the thickness of the metal, such as No. 10 x 3/4 in. L.

Lath and Construction Screws
Lath screws have Phillips truss heads and self-tapping threads for attaching lath to wood or steel studs in stucco and plaster work. Construction screws have Phillips flat heads for wood to metal fastening, and a drill point and flute size the hole for the threads. Check whether your framing is wood or steel before you choose, and match the screw length to the material thickness.
