Buying Guide: Choosing Nails, Screws and Staples
Masonry, Deck and Siding Nails
The 10D 3 in. masonry cut nail attaches wood to concrete, mortar joints and brick, and its blunt point and tapered shank help reduce splitting. The 10D 3 in. hot-dipped galvanized deck nail and the 4D 1-1/2 in. siding nail for vinyl and aluminum are also offered. Match the nail length to the thickness of the material you are fastening.
Drywall, Deck and Cement Board Screws
Phillips drywall screws come in sizes such as No. 6 x 1 in. L, No. 6 x 1-1/4 in. L and No. 6 x 1-5/8 in. L. Exterior deck screws have a Star Bugle Head, such as No. 8 x 1-1/4 in. L and No. 10 x 3-1/2 in. L, and the No. 8 x 1-5/8 in. L cement board screw has a flat head for fiber cement boards. Match the screw length to the thickness of your material, and check the head style on the old screw.
Fence Staples and Narrow Crown Staples
Hot-dipped galvanized fence staples include 3/4 in. L, 14 Ga. and 1-1/2 in. L, 9 Ga. sizes, and the 3/4 in. staple is for attaching wire fence to wood posts and is ideal for attaching poultry or aviary netting to wooden posts. The 1/4 in. W L-Style narrow crown staples are 18 Ga. and come in a 900 count. Check the staple length and gauge against your material and the old staples before you order.

How do I choose the right length or size?
Start with the size on the old fastener, such as 10D for nails or No. 6 for drywall screws, and match it. Measure the thickness of the material you are fastening so the length suits the job. Check the head style on the old fastener as well.

Collated fasteners are held together with paper, wire, plastic, tape or glue at a specific angle for power nailers and staplers. The 2-3/8 in. 12 Ga. framing nail is 21 deg. with a smooth shank, and the 2 in. 11-1/2 Ga. version is 28 deg. with a ring shank. Check your tool manual for the angle and fastener type it accepts.
