Buying Guide: Choosing the Right Pipe Fitting

PVC Schedule 40 and 80 Fittings
The Schedule 40 PVC plug in 1-1/4 in. MPT by 1-1/4 in. FPT is for pressure systems where temperatures will not exceed 140 F. Schedule 80 PVC fittings, such as a 1 in. spigot by 1/2 in. slip reducing bushing, have a thicker wall and are for pressure applications. Check the schedule, size and connection, such as slip, hub or FPT, before you order.

ABS and PVC DWV Fittings
ABS fittings are for drain, waste and vent purposes only, such as a 1-1/2 in. hub ABS 90 degree elbow. PVC DWV fittings are for gravity-fed, non-pressure systems where temperatures will not exceed 140 F, such as a 4 in. hub PVC 22-1/2 degree street elbow. For DWV applications, gradual sloping DWV fittings must be used.

Trap Adapters, Cleanouts and Caps
An ABS trap adapter is 1-1/2 in. MPT by 1-1/4 in. dia. spigot, and an ABS cleanout is 1-1/2 in. spigot by 1-1/2 in. FPT. A 1/2 in. Schedule 40 PVC slip cap is sold as a 25 count, and a 4 in. hub ABS flush cleanout tee is also offered. Measure the old trap, cleanout or cap before you order, and check the connection type on each end.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Charlotte Pipe make?
Charlotte Pipe makes PVC and ABS fittings. Products include Schedule 30, 40 and 80 PVC fittings, ABS and PVC drain, waste and vent fittings, adapters, couplings, elbows, tees, wyes, flush bushings, trap adapters, caps, plugs and cleanouts.

How do I choose the right fitting size or connection type?
Measure the old fitting or pipe before you order, and match the size and connection type, such as slip, hub, socket, spigot, FPT or MPT. Make sure the material matches your pipe, and use DWV fittings only for non-pressure drain lines. For pressure systems, choose a fitting meant for pressure use, such as Schedule 80 PVC, and check the temperature limit.

What temperature limit do these fittings have?
The PVC and ABS drain, waste and vent fittings are for non-pressure systems where temperatures will not exceed 140 F. The Schedule 40 PVC plug is for pressure systems where temperatures will not exceed 140 F as well. Check the temperature limit on each fitting before you order, and have a qualified technician install any pressure-system fitting.
